Selecting vision-panel glass: rating, thickness, aperture and weight

Start with the fire requirement, then check leaf space, retention, glazing weight and hardware as one doorset.

Selection & supplyEdited by MINGANSite updated: 2026-10-02

Read the performance requirement first

E addresses integrity, EW adds a radiation criterion, and EI combines integrity and insulation. Interpret the classification and duration within the applicable standard and doorset documentation. The term fire-resistant glass is insufficient for selection, and fire insulation is distinct from ordinary energy-saving thermal performance.

Coordinate thickness and aperture

Check leaf thickness, glazing pocket, aperture and bead design together. Slim glass can help in constrained leaves, but suitability depends on the verified doorset configuration. Any processing or change to the glass and sealing detail needs prior confirmation, rather than an improvised adjustment to fit.

Include weight in hardware and use assessments

A thicker or larger vision panel generally adds leaf weight, affecting hinges, closers and operating-force coordination. Selection must address everyday visibility, normal operation and fire performance. Compare options using the actual aperture and leaf information, not just a glass price per square metre.

Project review checklist

  1. Confirm classification, duration, standard and doorset evidence.
  2. Check the glazing pocket, beads, seals and aperture.
  3. Assess glazing weight with the leaf and hardware configuration.
