Energy performance and fire resistance are separate
IGUs and Low-E coatings can improve building thermal performance, while UV measures address a particular exposure. Their presence alone does not establish suitability for an exterior fire-rated application. Verify the product’s exterior use and durability evidence, including the complete build-up after any additional pane or cavity.
Review sustained heat and edge conditions
Orientation, shading, conditioned-space boundaries and frame restraint influence exposure. The source highlights that reducing heat transfer or slowing temperature rise does not eliminate heat. Review interlayer, edge-seal and frame compatibility for the actual product and application rather than treating an added IGU as automatic exterior qualification.
Define exposure before selecting the build-up
Describe climate, façade orientation, dimensions, installation height, inside/outside direction and expected exposure. Where fire, thermal, acoustic and appearance requirements coexist, verify the basis for the final combined configuration and review changes with the relevant specialists.
Project review checklist
- Identify exterior, semi-exterior or conditioned-space exposure and shading.
- Check fire and durability evidence for the complete build-up.
- Do not substitute energy or UV performance for fire-application evidence.
