Define orientation and performance
Skylights differ from vertical windows and partitions. Establish slope, support, fire-exposure direction, dimensions and required classification before checking the relevant evidence. A result for vertical construction cannot be transferred to inclined or horizontal glazing without an appropriate basis.
Coordinate solar exposure and structural compatibility
Glass and edges remain exposed to sunlight, temperature changes and weather. Check exterior suitability, UV exposure and thermal cycling alongside self-weight, movement and support. The source advocates long-term service as a design objective; that is not a universal product lifetime or warranty.
Treat drainage as part of the system
Design glass, framing, seals and drainage together rather than focusing only on the visible pane. Drawings should show joints, perimeter interfaces, drainage paths and maintenance access. Completion checks need to address weather protection and drainage while preserving compatibility with the fire-rated construction.
Project review checklist
- Provide slope, span, support, dimensions and exposure direction.
- Coordinate fire, exterior durability, structural and drainage requirements.
- Define maintenance access and inspection items at handover.
